Sheffield Photographers

Chris Saunders - Portrait and Band photographer

Chris has been a photographer for over 15 years on a freelance basis, working for clients ranging from Universal Records to Authors as well as making time for his own projects. To begin his presentation Chris introduced his 'First proper photograph' of Bill Hicks. He talked fondly of this photograph describing it as 'Really special' to him as Chris knew he was performing locally and simply asked Bill if he would like his photo taken. Bill agreed and after an hour Chris had got his first photograph. Chris then went on to explain that a few years later Bill Hicks died and he started to get more recognition for his comedy and as a result Chris's photograph started to be used.

The second photograph he presented was another portrait, but this time of David Lynch. Chris had written to the filming company David worked for asking when he'd next be in the UK he was told that David wouldn't be in the UK anytime soon but they would keep him in mind. Eventually David Lynch came to the UK and Chris was ready, with only half an hour given to get a good shot Chris was under a lot of pressure and so he planned rigorously. However when the day came the filming company was running late so David was only available for five minutes as a result a more spontaneous approach had to be taken. Even with such a short notice change Chris got an amazing shot with David all in focus smoking a cigarette and I think that is what makes it such an impressive photograph.

An example of one of his Projects -
Chris describes himself as having always been fascinated by peoples faces. As a portrait photographer he gets to look into details found in faces and he looks forward to seeing how faces change over time and develop. His current projects is called 1-100 where he will take close up photos of 100 people from Sheffield and request that they provide a clear photograph of themselves when they were young then put them together at the end of his project to show how each individuals face has changed.
I like the images as they show how people age and look like a new person but they still have uniquely individual features. Also I like how there is a contrast with the old and new photos as the backgrounds are white on the old pictures and black on the new picture. The use of black and white helps make a clear connection between the faces and help highlight similar factors.

  1. What is your next project?
  2. Have you ever considered photographing relatives to see how their facial features are similar?

Mark Harvey -  Commercial photographer

Unlike Chris Saunders working on a freelance basis Mark Harvey decided to invest in setting up a photography business called ID8. Mark owns and manages his business and has twenty years of experience under his belt working in different photography genres. Mark over the years has worked on projects such as documentary photography, portrait photography , public relations photography, editorial  photography and corporate photography. From these areas of expertise a certain overall style is generated - clean, sharp and direct. This overall style makes Marks photographs perfect for use in the press as for example if it was for a public relations client a crisp image that can directly express what the client wants fulfills its purpose and allows Mark to be the middle man and create a relationship between the client and their audience.

This photo helps give the company have an authoritative look and represents their professionalism.

LO1: KTA 1: Evidence of Class Research - Wide angle photos and Bulb Photography

           http://oneslidephotography.com/shooting-extraordinary-photograph-using-wide-angle-lens/

This photo has been enhanced through the use of a wide angle lens, it captures all the colours in the sky where as a normal lens might only be able to capture the horse and cart. The placement of the horse and cart help the viewer to focus on it because the sun is behind it in contrast with the rest of the sky.

Bulb Photography -
Bulb photography is a shutter speed on a camera that allows long exposure so that the photographer can take direct control.
